How To Brew: Cold Brew

Cold Brew

Very simple, can be made in almost any vessel, but for this recipe we’re going to look at the Hario cold brew pot, then making a single cup cold brew in a French press.

Hario Cold Brew Pot

80g coarse ground coffee

600-700ml room temp water

8-10 hours steep time

  1. Place the ground coffee into the infusion insert

  2. Put the insert in place at the top of the carafe

  3. Pour the 600ml water through the coffee bed until you reach the maximum for the carafe

  4. Put the lid on and refrigerate for 8-10 hours

  5. After the 8-10 hrs, remove the infuser insert and replace the lid. Serve 200ml over ice

TIPS

You can make this the night before and have it ready for the next morning. A pot should safely last around 3 days in the fridge, if you haven’t finished it all by then.

French Press Cold Brew

35g coarse ground coffee

250ml room temp water

8-10 hours steep time

  1. Place the ground coffee in the carafe

  2. Pour the 250ml water in ensuring to wet all of the grounds

  3. Stir 3 to 4 times to agitate and make sure there’s no dry pockets

  4. Put the cap + strainer on and place in fridge for 8-10 hours

  5. After 8-10 hours, slowly plunge the strainer, trying not to disturb the bed too much

  6. Pour and serve over ice

TIPS

You can make a version of cold brew in almost anything, you just need to be able to separate/strain the coffee grounds away from the extracted coffee at the end. You can make a “teabag” with a v60 paper and some string, or you can just put the coffee and the water in a jug, leave it to steep then strain it through a sieve at the end. Something like the Hario pot or French press is easier and cleaner, but in a pinch, you can use this alternate methods.
